Beautyrest Black Mattress Reviews: Worth The Money, Or Buy A Bed In A Box Instead?

As part of my Beautyrest Black Mattress reviews on this page, I’m going to help make shopping for these luxury class mattresses easier.

There are actually 12 mattresses in the Beautyrest Black lineup, divided into three classes: K-Class, C-Class and the L-Class.

We’re going to keep it simple, though, because I do have a few favorites in the lineup. After spending 25 years as a mattress designer and manufacturer myself, I can usually spot the best made and most durable mattress models and I know this brand very well.

We’ll focus on the mattresses that most owners review and praise for their comfort, support, and overall performance.

The Beautyrest Black Mattress line is one of the most popular luxury mattresses and a respected titan of the industry, and I’ll explain why and focus on just a few really great options at the best prices I’ve found online.

Serta/Simmons Beautyrest Black Mattresses are considered a premium mattress, and are typically combination or hybrid mattresses made with various layers of specialized foams, textiles, cooling fabrics, and individually pocketed coil systems.

One thing I’ll mention up front is that Beautyrest Black mattresses are shipped in a large box, actual size, and are not compressed and rolled like most online “bed in a box” brands.

This keeps the mattress in precisely the condition it was in while on the bench being made by Beautyrest’s master mattress makers.

An Industry Expert With 25 Years Of Experience Bench Building His Own Line Of Mattresses Reviews The Top Beautyrest Black Mattresses

In our Beautyrest Black mattress reviews,, we’ll start by discussing the three different “classes” of types of mattresses in the Black program. Of course, the signature outer fabric, which is distinctively designed to look like a limousine, an American Express Centurion Card, or maybe even an Uber Black class of car, is eye catching and provocative, for sure.

Beautyrest Black offers three different mattresses to choose from — The L-Class, C-Class, and K-Class. These mattresses offer multiple firmness options, from plush to firm, and you’ll be an ideal fit with one of the Black mattress options especially if you want multiple memory foam layers to relieve pressure and cradle your body without sinking.

The brand is also known for having a signature specialized, pillowy and plusher comfort level at the top of the mattress. With any of the mattresses offered, you’ll get a 10 year factory warranty, a 120 night trial through our exclusive links shown below, and free shipping and in home setup. I’ve also arranged for you to receive a $300 VISA gift card with any purchase.

Made In American Factories Using State Of The Art Technology

Headquartered in Atlanta, Simmons Bedding Company, founded in 1870, has 18 manufacturing and assembly centers across the country.

This provides immediate access to most urban centers and suburbs so you can get your mattress quickly. The manufacturing centers are state of the art, and use component assembly techniques to bench build every Beautyrest Black Mattress so each is identical to the unit built before and after.

The Beautyrest Black collection is considered a luxury brand, it is actually considered to be mid-range as far as comparing it with super luxury brands. They also build what they call their “Platinum” line of mattresses which cost more than the Balck series, but I think you’re going to get comparable support and comfort without paying over the top prices for what I think is unnecessary components.

What’s unique to the Beautyrest Black Mattress lineup is their use of cooling fabric technology, called The BlackICE™ cooling system, which sits on the top of the Beautyrest Black mattress. Cooling mattresses are a pretty popular thing right now, and they actually do improve the quality of your sleep.

The BlackICE™ technology uses specialized foams, typically gel memory foam or high density polyurethane foam, along with fabrics that wick away moisture and disperse heat out and away from your body.

This creates the ideal sleep temperature throughout the night and helps you sleep cooler and more soundly. Lowering the body temperature even a few degrees actually improves sleep, and makes you feel more energized upon awakening. Here’s an NIH research article which discusses the effects of body temperature on sleep.

What Is The T3 Pocketed Coil Technology That Is Used In The Beautyrest Black Mattress Line?

Many hybrid mattresses that are made with alternating layers of foam, textiles, and pocket coil layers, use their own brand of coil which imparts distinctive and unique sensations to their brand. According to Beautyrest, their T3 coil technology is proprietary and found only in Beautyrest Black models.

It’s described by having three steel strands wound into one coil to absorb energy, reduce motion and provide exceptional resilience for support, durability and undisturbed sleep.

The photo below shows the Beautyrest Black CX Class, which features the Black Ice cooling foam quilted layer, multiple layers of comfort foams, a layer of latex to add bounciness and lift, and a firmer foam edge allow for ease of sitting and for minimizing motion transfer.

While the CX doesn’t offer the support and springiness of Nano-coils, it does offer a layer of latex that provides additional buoyancy which makes it very easy to turn on while you sleep. If you want a super sumptuous and luxurious feel, though, it’s likely worth the upgrade.

In my Beautyrest Black Mattress reviews below you’ll find some common characteristics with all of the models I recommend to you, including the following elements that make up each mattress. Note that within each class, you’ll have several firmness options to choose from including Ultra Plush, which would be soft, immersive, and more body hugging.

If you are accustomed to a pilowtop feel, and like a lot more cushion and a hugging sensation, and if you are a belly sleeper, Ultra Plush is a good option to consider.

In the Medium category, which probably suits about 85% of shoppers, you’ll get a supportive feel, but while on your back you’ll get a little better pressure relief. Because lying on your side applies more pressure at hips and shoulders, a medium feel will give the best pressure relief, and is usually a good choice for side sleepers.

That’s me (Marc Anderson, CEO of The Mattress Buyer Guide) reviewing and test driving a Beautyrest C Class mattress. I’m a side sleeper and I liked the pressure relieving softer feel of these mattresses. Just the right amount of cushion and comfort for a softer to medium level of plushness.

As far as their firm options, depending upon the class of Beautyrest Black Mattress options as outlined below, you can get what the company describes as Firm, meaning less body conforming, slightly easier to turn on, and firmer edge support when sitting or transferring in and out.

There is even an Extra Firm option in the L Class mattress option, which is very firm. Although I don’t review the L Class, you can opt for a firmer model in the K or C options I feature below in my links.

Honestly, if you are thinking of investing in a luxury mattress, what you are really paing for is really a more sumptuous, softer, and plusher initial feel, but experiencing firmness and support right beneath.

The trick to the fine art of hand building a great mattress is to deliver an inviting feel without crashing to the bottom, and The Beautyrest Black Mattress designers set out to do just that when they created the lineup around fifteen years ago.

Understanding The Class And Firmness Options In the Beautyrest Black Collection

So, the Beautyrest Black Mattress lineup has three what I call groups, The K-Class, C-Class and the L-Class. Here’s a detailed overview of the difference between each of the classes. Note than when you get to my choices down below, we narrow it down to about 10 individual mattress options I’ve selected to make it easier to choose:

  1. K-Class (top of the line with RightTemp memory foam and a layer of micro coils; $3,899 to $4,499)
  2. C-Class (mid-range with RightTemp memory foam; $3,299 to $3,499)
  3. X-Class (hybrids with combinations of foams and the T3 Pocketed Coils; $2,599 to $3,399)
  4. L-Class (entry-level; $2,299 to $2,799)

Because I’m only recommending two C-Clas options in my Beautyrest Black Mattress reviews, we’re going to focus on them because the cost is substantially lower. The X Class and L Class are not quite as popular and honestly, when I physically tested them at various locations, I felt that the C Class really delivered on your return on investment, especially with the cooling memory foam, and then the K Class which incorporates the micro-coil unit into the design- a major feature that I loved.

The C-Class generally runs $700-1000 less than the pricier K Class, and I felt it offered virtually identical levels of comfort, support, and durability. Let’s take a closer look:

Beautyrest Black C-Class Mattress Collection Overview

The C-Class Collection is consistent with all Beautyrest Black beds in that they all have traditional spring construction.  They have what they call the T3 Pocketed Coil which is the latest design from Beautyrest, and they’ve been using pocketed coils forever. There are no firm mattresses in this collection.  There’s a medium bed and a plush feeling bed, and then both are also available in taller, fluffier pillow top designs.

The C-Class is the midrange category and the most popular in the lineup. Owners tend to write really good reviews about their mattresses, with consistent ratings on overall comfort, pressure relief, and support. All four mattresses in this collection share 3 important features found on all Beautyrest Black mattresses:

  • All of the mattresses use the T3 Pocketed Coil design spring system.  The design of this coil is the most advanced by Beautyrest and they only offer it on their luxury Black mattresses. It involves a three strand coil which acts much like a suspension on a luxury vehicle, minimizing motion transfer and elevating and lifting the body.
  • Up top, there is a specialized foam layer called BlackIce 4.0 on the top of the mattress.  This material is what is called phase change cooling technology, and is pretty much state of the art as far as passive ambient temerature reduction. If you put your hand on the mattress you can actually feel the cooling effect pretty immediately. And again, a cooler mattress is crucial to sleeping more deeply.
  • Beautyrest Black Mattresses includes a lot of premium foams in their design. The four models in the C-Class collection have layers of foams arranged in order and quantities to make each mattress feel and serve a different purpose.  The mattresses range in height from 13 3/4″ to 16″.

The C-Class stands above the lower L-Class (I don’t include any L Class mattresses in my options below) because the C-Class has a layer of RightTemp™ Memory Foam.  This formulation is a proprietary component used in the Beautyrest lineup and is only available on the C-Class or more expensive K-Class mattresses.  This material is optimized for cooling and better pressure relief than cheaper gel or memory foam formulations.

Beautyrest Black C Class Overview

The Beautyrest Black C Class series is the most popular premium mattress lineup that Simmons offers, with features that clearly set the lineup apart. When I test drove the CX mattress, however, the one distinctive feature I noticed was that the initial feel when on my side or back was livelier and slightly more responsive feel than their other offerings, even at higher price points.

Beautyrest Black® C-Class models include comfort and pressure-relieving upgrades for up to 18% more overall pressure relief. A luxurious layer, made with silk, alpaca and cashmere provides unmatched comfort and breathability, while Self-Response™ Latex ensures individualized support for different parts of your body.
