CBD Mattress Reviews: Myths, Benefits, And The Rise Of The “Calming Mattress”
Features And Benefits Of CBD Mattresses And Where To Buy
In 1970, the US Congress included marijuana in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act and considered it to have “no accepted medical use.” Since then, 33 states and DC have legalized the medical use of marijuana. An incredible amount of research has proven that cannabis has vast implications in medicine and offers far reaching benefits as more and more people are including the non psycho-active component of cannabis (commonly referred to as CBD) in their own medicine cabinets.
CBD is now part of the daily regimen for millions of Americans, included alongside of other proven across the counter and culturally accepted remedies. CBD mattresses, which are infused with micro-encapsulated CBD oil to slowly release over spans of time, are already on the market and could change the way we sleep.
Though extensive research is ongoing involving CBD oil and its other forms, including edibles and even capsules, it has been demonstrated to help with a multitude of medical conditions, including insomnia, anxiety, chronic pain, high blood pressure, epilepsy, depression and more. Even Parkinson’s Disease and glaucoma can be improved by consuming CBD oils.
In recent years, as marijuana and its non-psychoactive ingredients have been legalized, people from all walks of life are trying the balms, oils, and edibles that are now proven to provide benefits that no other substance can deliver.
Once taboo because of its cultural heritage and legal consequences, we are now embracing the ancient natural medicine for what it truly is: a beneficial, miracle substance that can treat a broad spectrum of conditions. The mechanism of action with CBD is pretty straightforward, as it is thought to influence other receptors, including opioid receptors that regulate pain and glycine receptors involved in the regulation of the “feel-good” hormone serotonin.
Read on to discover the life altering benefits of CBD oil and how you can benefit from sleeping on a mattress that is infused using a specialized process with a high potency CBD extract that can calm, heal, and improve the quality of your sleep.
The active ingredient in the legal form of the cannabis plant is CBD, short for cannabidiol, a natural derivative that has been clinically proven to impart a feeling of relaxation and calmness. It is the non-psychoactive component cannabis, unlike its potent and psycho-active counterpart, THC, short for tetrahydrocannabinol. By law, CBD and hemp products may contain no more than 0.3% THC, so there is almost zero psychoactive or intoxicating effect, even though the substance offers a host of health and medical benefits.
Recently several companies have introduced CBD mattress options that contain fibers infused with CBD oils or woven with hemp that can provide a host of benefits, their target market being restless sleepers and people seeking to reduce anxiety and stress in order to get a higher level of deeper, more restorative sleep. One company, however, uses a proprietary technique that claims to provide CBD to the skin for the entire lifespan of their mattress.
One of these companies is a startup called ZBD which we have been following closely as they brought their product to the marketplace. They use a special CBD infused matrix that binds to the fiber of the outer encasement of the mattress which slowly releases the oil when friction is applied to the micro-capsules and can continue to infuse steady concentrations of the oil even after 10 years, which is the warranty period offered by the company.
using Micro-encapsulation to infuse cbd oils into fabrics
Through a scientific technique called micro-encapsulation, CBD molecules are microscopically infused into high-performance fabrics by encasing and sealing microscopic droplets of zero-THC, hemp-derived CBD with a protective encasement. One company, Devan, using a patented textile finishing treatment permanently bonds the microcapsules to the fibers in the fabric.
Strategically placed within the fabric, the microcapsules gradually open over time as your body creates friction as your body moves and traverses across the mattress surface. When the individual capsules break open, the CBD is released and trans-dermally absorbed, where it interacts with your body’s endo-cannabinoid system (ECS) to reduce pain and inflammation caused by physical activities. It also calms, relaxes, and soothes your mind as the CBD gently interacts with your central nervous system. Devan has created a library of extensive research and documentation as more brands incorporate the technology into fibers and textiles.
The ZBD Bed is the first of its kind to infuse the outer covering of their mattress using a proprietary technique which allows body friction to release high purity CBD oil which has been locked in “micro-capsules” within the fabric.
The manufacturer claims that the fabric will release CBD for the lifespan of the mattress. One of the new startup’s slogans is: “Don’t take a pill- just go to bed!” Click here to visit their site.
Whereas the bedding industry is accustomed to working with supportive and soothing materials like memory foam, latex, gel foam, and even copper and silver infused materials designed to maximize comfort and restfulness, the startup category of CBD mattresses offer a groundbreaking opportunity for consumers seeking to improve their sleep hygiene, reduce pain and inflammation and and maximize the small slice of time that they carve out for rest and sleep.
Because CBD is clinically proven to reduce anxiety and relieve stress, I’m surprised it took this long for the bedding industry to create this new category. The technology is very simple. Several companies are using hemp in their outer fabric coverings, and as layers inside the mattress which are infused with CBD oil in such a way that it continually circulates the substance through the entire mattress.
Several companies introduced new programs offering CBD infused mattresses at the biggest bedding industry Market in Lass Vegas in 2020. Top 10 mattress producer Therapedic, the biggest bedding manufacturer to jump into the category, is showing a three-number CBD mattress line in which the mattresses feature CBD-infused foam and CBD-infused covers.
A company called Therapedic is introducing a three mattress lineup called “B-Calm”, which offers models which are soft, medium, and firm in feel, but all have components and infusions of CBD that offer the calming, anxiety reducing, and stress relieving qualities a mattress can deliver, but on a much more effective level.
CEO Gerry Borreggine believes CBD bedding could deliver the next big feature in the bedding category: Calming products. “Currently, CBD is an unregulated supplement,” he said. “But studies have been published claiming it has been clinically proven to induce calmness and has been used in treating insomnia. Who wouldn’t want that in a mattress?”
Paramount Sleep just unveiled their “Nature’s Spa CBD” mattress. It offers a rayon and cotton knit fabric that is infused with certified pure CBD, built into their 100% natural hemp upholstery pad and the mattress also contains other organic components like Talalay latex, New Zealand wool and organic cotton. The encapsulated CBD is released slowly by friction, allowing it to be absorbed by the body to promote healthy sleep while reducing inflammation and anxiety, Paramount officials said.
Moving and turning on the mattress caused the infused CBD to be released, and is the first mattress which seems to be able to infuse the compound into your immediate surroundings. This allows your skin to absorb micro-amounts of the substance, as well as small amounts inhaled directly into the lungs, with zero negative effects on your airway.
“The evidence is mounting; CBD is a safe, non-habit-forming, and natural aid for people who have occasional insomnia,” said Richard Fleck, Paramount’s president. “With the CBD market exploding, offering consumers a CBD and hemp fiber option was a natural fit for our Nature’s Spa program.”
Other companies are introducing sleep accessories to their lines which include infusions of CBD into their product components. A company called Malouf has CBD to three of its signature pillows., the ActiveDough, the Zoned Dough, and the Shoulder. “As wellness trends grow and shoppers search for whole-body healing solutions, CBD is an exciting new option”, Malouf said.
M Lilly is featuring a CBD oil-infused outer covering in a new 15-inch mattress, and promises a more restful and more calming night of sleep.
ZBD Bed, a startup featuring “the first” CBD-infused mattress, “promotes healing, relaxation and rest”, company officials say. ZBD, which currently sells exclusively online, though the company is looking to expand its business model to brick and mortar stores.
Yet another company called CannaBeds, is highlighting its environmentally friendly Gel Memory Foam Hemp Mattress line and also offers a top-selling pillow product which contains hemp and natural latex.
CBD Can Help With Many Medical Ailments, Research Suggests:
CBD shows promise in the treatment of anxiety disorders, as suggested by a 2015 review of studies in the Journal of Neurotherapeutics. According to the researchers, CBD demonstrated anxiety-relieving effects in animal research, and numerous studies are ongoing.
Curiously, lower doses of CBD (10 milligrams per kilogram or less) were more efficient at treating symptoms of anxiety. Higher doses (100 milligrams per kilogram or more) exhibited virtually no effect. You could compare these effects to those induced by benzodiazepene drugs such as Valium or Xanax.
Part of this response could be explained by the way that CBD acts in the brain. In many cases, CBD works as an antagonist, meaning that it triggers an opposite response when binding to a receptor. It is possible that low doses can elicit a positive agonist response, while high doses “overwhelm” the brain and trigger a compensatory effect to “fight” CBD’s effects.
Among the few human trials evaluating CBD’s anxiolytic effects was one published in the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry in 2019. For this study, 57 men were given either CBD oil or a placebo before a public-speaking event. Anxiety was evaluated using physiological measures (such as blood pressure, heart rate, etc.) and a relatively reliable test for mood states known as the Visual Analog Mood Scale (VAMS).
According to the investigators, men provided 300 mg of CBD exhibited less anxiety than those given a placebo. Interestingly, those provided 100 mg or 600 mg of CBD oil did not.
CBD oil may offer benefit those with drug addiction, suggests a 2015 review of studies published in Substance Abuse.
In an analysis of 14 published studies (nine involving animals and five involving humans), scientists with the University of Montreal concluded that CBD “showed promise” in treating people with opioid, cocaine, or psychostimulant addiction.
However, the effect of CBD on each addiction type was often very different. With opioid addiction, for example, CBD showed little effect in minimizing withdrawal symptoms in the absence of THC. By contrast, CBD on its own appeared effective in minimizing drug-seeking behaviors in users of cocaine, methamphetamine, and other psychostimulant drugs.
There have also been suggestions that CBD may aid in the treatment of cannabis and nicotine addiction. Further research is needed.
Medical marijuana is frequently prescribed to people with intractable pain, including those with terminal cancer. There is some evidence that CBD contributes to this effect.
According to a 2012 study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, rats injected with inflammatory chemicals in their hindfeet experienced less inflammation and neuropathic pain when treated with an oral dose and spinal injection of CBD.
Scientists believe that CNB reduces nerve pain by binding to glycine receptors in the brain that regulate the speed in which nerve signals pass between nerve cells. Human studies evaluating the use of CBD in treating chronic pain are lacking. Those that do exist almost invariably include THC, making it difficult to isolate CBD’s distinct effects.
CBD oil may reduce the risk of heart disease by alleviating hypertension (high blood pressure) in certain people, suggests a 2017 study in JCI Insight.
For this study, nine healthy men took either 600 milligrams (mg) of CBD or 600 mg of a placebo. According to the researcher, those treated with CBD had lower blood pressure before and after exposure to stressful stimuli (including exercise or extreme cold).
In addition, the stroke volume (the amount of blood remaining in the heart after a heartbeat) was significantly reduced, meaning that the heart was pumping more efficiently.
The findings suggest that CBD oil may be a suitable complementary therapy for people whose hypertension is complicated by stress and anxiety.
However, there is no evidence that CBD oil can treat hypertension on its own or prevent hypertension in people at risk. While stress is known to complicate high blood pressure, it cannot cause hypertension.
More Information About CBD Micro-Encapsulation In Mattresses
Through a scientific process called micro-encapsulation, CBD molecules are strategically infused into high-performance fabrics within by wrapping microscopic droplets of hemp-derived CBD that contains no active THC with a protective micro-coating. Using the Devan Company’s patented textile finishing treatment, the microcapsules bond to the fibers in the fabric.
As body movements create friction against the eggshell like encasement containing the CBD oil, the microcapsules gradually open over time as each layer of the CBD mattress outer covering responds to friction from your skin. When the individual capsules break open, the CBD is released and trans-dermally absorbed, where it reacts with your body’s endo-cannabinoid system (ECS) to help regulate and reduce pain and inflammation caused by physical activities.
In the meantime, Devan has put together extensive research and testing documentation in order to accommodate questions from brands and retailers on this trendy subject. CBD infused mattresses are only beginning to hit the marketplace. Our Trusted Dealer, ZBD Mattress, is on the forefront of the exploding mattress category.
