Zoma Mattress Review: Finally, A Sports Mattress Designed For Athletes, Gym Rats, And Fitness Fans
In our Zoma Mattress review, we’re going to shed light on why athletes and fitness enthusiasts need a specific kind of mattress.
If you’re at the top of your game, you need a mattress that delivers proper support, pressure relief, and restorative REM sleep to promote healing and muscle growth.
A mattress for performance athletes or people who train regularly need the following benefits from a mattress:
- Specialized foam layers that eliminate pressure points while lifting or elevating the body
- Cooling fabric that actively ventilates to maintain slightly lower skin temps to promote deep sleep
- Construction or design that maintains spine alignment to allow connective tissue and muscles to relax, heal, and eliminate lactic acid buildup
- Firmer edge support for transfer, putting on or removing gear
The Zoma Mattress was created and is crafted to provide these attributes, but does it really work? We’ll take a look and evaluate hundreds of reviews by actual owners, many of whom are professional athletes.
The Zoma Mattress Was Designed To Help Your Body Restore And Rejuvenate
Essentially, The Zoma Mattress is a memory foam mattress, but crafted using high performance materials. It was designed to speed up and improve muscle and connective tissue recovery after a workout.
Its unique design incorporates zoned areas with different firmnesses in strategic parts of the mattress, especially near the top, so that it effectively distributes body weight and shuts down pressure points.
It is 11 inches tall, and has 3 layers of foam, which most owners describe as a medium feel that isn’t rigid, and ranks about a 5 out of 10 on my typical firmness scale.
Priced at $799 in queen size, the mattress is equipped with a 100 night no questions asked trial period, a 10 year warranty, and free shipping as well.
The Zoma Mattress is crafted by hand in Arizona, and has been on the market for a few years now. I always begin reviews on mattress design by discussing the outer fabric, which is the most important ingredient when it comes to coolness and keeping trapped air away from the body.
The use of a breathable, stretchable material called AirCloth, which wicks away moisture, is ideal for a mattress designed to promote deeper sleep. Cooling the skin temperature of the body slightly below internal core temperature has been shown to increase beneficial sleep, which allows our immune systems to produce new cells and reduce toxins in the body, including lactic acid.
Lactic acid buildup is a by product of any athletic activity. During intense exercise, there may not be enough oxygen available to complete the process, so a substance called lactate is made. Your body can convert this lactate to energy without using oxygen, but typically this lactate or lactic acid can build up in your bloodstream faster than you can burn it off.
The top layer of the mattress is a 2″ zoned layer of memory foam that cradles and support specific areas of the body to assist in spine alignment.
Proper spine alignment is essential to people pursuing active and vigorous lifestyles, especially during sleep.
Zoma refers to this top layer as able to deliver cooling comfort, easing pressure points using their three-
zone Triangulex™ gel memory foam.
The top memory foam layer is support by a layer of very elastic response foam right underneath that doesn’t compress, but is much bouncier and has high springback qualities to keep you from immersing too deeply.
One of the problems with many memory foam mattresses is that you have a tendency to sink in and get “hugged” a bit too tightly, which makes changing positions more difficult, actually causing you to wake up, interrupting the effects of healing and restorative sleep. The two top layers, totaling 4″ in thickness, allow The Zoma Mattress to keep your body slightly elevated rather than swallowed by your mattress.
Underneath the top two layers which I refer to as “comfort layers” since they are what your body relates to as the cushier part of a mattress that you can feel. These layers determine the relative softness or firmness sensation of the mattress. But, as with most memory foam recipes, the underlying 7″ layer of high density foam is critical is supporting your body above, but also with edge support.
Edge support is often miscalculated by manufacturers and mattress designers, and has to be calibrated precisly, otherwise you overshoot your concept and get either a mattress that is way too soft and spongy, or too stiff.

Cleaner Ingredients, No Off Gassing Or VOC fumes
The Zoma Mattress is manufactured in the USA using eco-friendly processes. All of their foam is CertiPUR-US® certified, free of harmful chemicals, and low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making it a smarter mattress choice for you and the environment.
These greener and less toxic foam layers have greatly reduced VOC off gassing, heavy metals, formaldehyde, ozone depleters, and PBDE’s. For athletes, and performance oriented fitness fans, this mattress is a great option if you are concerned about what you are breathing and eating.
In addition to my Zoma mattress review, I’ve evaluated dozens of mattresses made with cleaner components, but often they are filled with a hidden or unmentioned layer of material that kind of negate the better part of a mattress recipe.
This mattress is designed simplistically and it’s pretty basic, containing just three layers of specialized foam along with a stretchy, highly breathable fabric exterior. After you place your order, shipping takes about a week. Your mattress is gently vacuum packaged and rolled, making receiving and setup easy.
In fact, many female customers have no problem handling their Zoma Mattress delivery, getting the 19″ x 19″ x 42″ tall box inside their house. One nice thing I like about the “bed in a box” concept is that your mattress will not get scuffed or chewed up by freight companies having to wrestle your mattress out of an 18 wheeler.
Calibrated To Level Up Your Spine
Owners who love their Zoma Mattress seem to point out the same features and benefits pretty uniformly. We sifted through reviews and found these common bullet points within the community:
- Typical height and weight proportionate athletes did not sink, but rather felt comfortably supported
- Zoma Mattress did not sleep hot, kept cool even with lightweight blanket
- Easy to turn on, transfer in and out, excellent edge support even at weights 180-215 lbs.
- In the event of return, company easy to work with
- After intense workout, muscle pain and soreness improved after switching to this brand
After much research online, we decided on the Zoma mattress and we are so glad that we did. This mattress is the most comfortable mattress we’ve ever slept on. Went on a trip a couple of weeks ago and the mattress in the Airbnb was nice, however it slept NOTHING like our Zoma. Couldn’t wait to get back home and sleep in our own bed. Definitely recommend the Zoma to anyone searching for a new mattress!!
