Avocado Green Mattress Review

In 2007 I created the first e-commerce latex mattress web site and imported my own latex material from Sri Lanka. After years of success, I like to think that my own company paved the way for today’s inventory of latex mattress retailers..and there are quite a few of them.

One company, though, caught my eye when they launched their lineup way back in 2016. Called Avocado, the company quickly exploded on the clean and green mattress scene, and today they command the largest chunk of the market with their unique lineup of pure latex mattresses made using their own source of Indian latex (probably the finest Dunlop latex on earth), organic wool, and organic cotton, all certified and credentialed. Their story is fascinating, and explains why this company sells about 2,000 mattresses…per day.

What makes the Avocado three model lineup so interesting is that the process for getting the raw materials inspired the company to purchase interests in the plantations that produce the latex in India, as well as the farms that produce their organic wool and organic cotton. This way, they have their skin in the game.

They even manufacture their own mattresses in their California factory, and don’t farm out their production to third party fabricators, one of very few mattress manufacturers to do so. This gave Avocado much more control over production, material quality, processes, and the compass heading of their company. It also allows them to produce a world class product at a competitive price.

The Avocado Mattress lineup is unique. Early on, the company invested in its farms in India that produce world class pure botanical latex, organic wool, and organic cotton, delivering directly from farm to bedroom. This Avocado Green model is shown without the pillow top and is their firmer variation.

Using a very raw and organic approach to their design and production, the company sticks to its puritanical approach to product quality. Their use of pure botanical Dunlop latex instead of synthetic, petroleum based SBR (styrene butadiene rubber) means that their mattresses are truly green, and their use of the term “vegan” is applicable, since the components are free of any animal or synthetic, chemically derived materials.

Using a very raw and organic approach to their design and production, the company sticks to its puritanical approach to product quality.

Their lineup consists of three distinctive models, one of which is 100% pure top to bottom latex, the other two feature pure latex and their signature organic and wool, but incorporates a pocketed coil system inside the mattresses, made by a company in the U.S., precisely the same company I used to purchase my own coil components from. Most mattresses are full of junk — plastic foams, toxic glues, harmful VOCs, and chemical flame retardants. Not the Avocado lineup of healthier, all natural latex mattresses. We checked out all of their components, and all of their textiles and foam layers are sourced from natural, nontoxic materials. They also source their latex and our wool from their own sustainable farms which they co-own along with the farmers. That’s what we call having skin in the game.

Their practices and business methodology demand the highest purity and quality. All of their component, including their wool and cotton, are all organic and nontoxic. And, one think we like as mattress reviewers is that they can prove it.

Their new 9” top to bottom Latex Mattress is GREENGUARD Gold, GOTS organic, and Formaldehyde-Free certified. Their cotton and wool are GOTS Organic Certified, Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX®, and USDA Organic. Most importantly, their Indian latex is GOLS Organic, Standard 100 OEKO-TEX®, eco-INSTITUT®, USDA Organic, Rainforest Alliance, and FSC® certified. Quite a fat pedigree of credentials.

Avocado mattresses feature a distinctive and signature needle-tufted rosette made from pure white organic wool. Needle-tufting is a time-honored technique dating back to the 17th century. It’s also highly functional and keeps the mattress components secure to prevent shifting of contents.

The construction of an Avocado Green or Vegan Mattress offers precise sewing, attention to detail, and use of clean and green organic textiles. By pulling ribbons through the full mattress in up to 32 locations across a mattress surface, their team of mattress makers bind the layers together — without the use of toxic solvent or water-based adhesives.

It radically improves durability and performance, and improves the resilience and immediately responsive qualities of their mattresses. And it’s one of many hallmarks of quality that Avocado is known for.

A Latex Mattress Provides Buoyancy, Pressure Relief, And Comfort – Never A Trapped Feeling

The Avocado Green mattress and the Vegan mattress model cost the same, the only real difference between the two models being the outer covering.  Unlike the Green mattress, the Vegan option’s top fill layer does not contain wool, but rather organic cotton instead, offering a Both mattresses include a 2-inch Dunlop latex comfort layer atop a pocketed zoned support core.

Made from 8-inch steel coils and an additional 1-inch latex layer, the breathable coil core allows for plenty of air circulation. The coils also give the mattress a firmer and more supportive feel, making it an ideal choice for heavier sleepers and customers seeking to optimize their spine alignment and relieve lower back pain.

Avocado Green Mattress, at 11” in height, without pillow top, is firmer and excellent choice for optimizing spine alignment and those seeking a less yielding and resilient immersive quality. Queen without pillow top $1399.
Avocado Green Mattress, at 13” in height, with pillow top build. This includes an extra 2” of pure botanical latex and is softer and more yielding, ideal for side sleepers and anyone with shoulder or hip pain, $1799 for Queen.
The newest mattress in the Avocado family is their 9” pure latex model, which contains strictly natural latex. Comprised of 3 different layers of both supportive as well as comfort layers, it is so extraordinary, it’s patented, using laser technology to precisely cut the zoned support waves in the design.

Opt For The Pillow Top Upgrade If You Are A Side Sleeper, Or Have Shoulder Or Hip Pain

One great feature about the Avocado lineup is that you can opt for a softer, cushier version of their beds also, upgrading the mattress with a built in pillow top component which contains an extra 2 inches of softer natural latex to their mattress.  Avocado’s medium pillow top is available in both the standard Green and Vegan versions. And, the price to jump from the standard model to the pillow top is reasonable, and extra $400 in queen, and an extra $600 in king size (the king size has to be constructed using 2 pieces that are welded together).

Like the mattresses themselves, the pillow tops differ only in their materials, with the Vegan featuring 100% organic cotton instead of an organic cotton/organic wool blend surrounding the layer of GOLS-certified latex. The feel of the pillow top is cushier, and a little more immersive (without feeling trapped or stuck) and is a great option for sidesteppers or those with hip or shoulder pain.

Let’s dive a little deeper into  Avocado Green mattress and discuss pricing, construction, benefits, and drawbacks to help you decide if either option is right for you. We will start from the top down.

Outer Covering Of The Avocado Mattress Lineup

Made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton and hand-tufted with up to 32 distinctive rosettes (a decorative embellishment which also serves to reach from top to bottom and secure the components inside the mattress), the non-removable covers for both of Avocado’s mattresses contain no adhesives, fire retardants, and other chemicals found in most mattress brands. The color is a creamy off-white with green piping and green upholstered handles, giving the beds a very earthy look and feel.

In case you have never heard of a GOTS certification before with fabrics and other kinds of textiles, The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.

Comfort Layers

Underneath the outer cover, you’ll find the primary difference between the Avocado Green and Vegan mattresses: a layer of organic wool in the Green model, and a layer of organic cotton in the Vegan model.

  • Avocado procures their GOTS-certified wool from a cooperative that the company co-owns with its farmers. As a natural material, wool provides natural temperature control and superior moisture-wicking qualities. It is a terrific insulator, keeping you cool in summer and warm in winter It is also naturally fire-retardant. Abit firmer than cotton.

  • GOTS-certified organic cotton provides many of the same qualities as wool, allowing for airflow and moisture control while adding softness. However, it is not quite as long-lasting as wool.

In mattresses with the optional pillow-top, the wool or cotton layer sits on top of 2 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, in addition to the 2 inches already inside the mattress comfort layer of all Avocado mattresses. The pillow-top piece is crafted from softer latex than the comfort layer beneath it, with an ILD (indentation load deflection) of 14 to 19. This is considerably softer than much of the latex used in comparable models, but it adds an inviting feel to the initial experience when lying down and nestling in.

Beneath that softer top layer is the comfort layer of latex, which rates at about 20 to 25 ILD, accounting for the softer feel of the pillow-top option, but still with enough firmness to be buoyantly supportive.

Of course, unlike other foams, including polyurethane and various memory foams, Natural Latex provides a firm bounce and excellent resilience that results in a stable sleep surface with long-lasting durability.

Because of its natural elasticity and stretch, it allows pressure to be delivered sideways, like spreading pizza dough across a pan, rather than downward into painful pinpoint pressure. As a naturally antimicrobial material, natural latex also discourages dust mites and other allergens, including mold, mildew, and other small organisms.

The Pocketed Coil Interior Provides Zoned Support To Your Body

Along with a 1-inch layer of very firm Dunlop latex situated below, the support core is composed of a uniquely designed pocketed innerspring unit that contains 1,414 independently floating recycled steel coils. The latex layer underneath dampens motion and provides a protective base layer beneath the superstructure of the Avocado lineup.

Coils of various sizes are used to provide zoned support where your body needs to differentiate support- example: more support for hips and shoulders where mass collects.

One question you might ask is why the makers of a truly green and eco-intelligent mattress company would use coils in their mattresses..but the answer is simple. Aside from being manufactured using recycled materials, the pocketed coil system that is used provides optimal support without backfilling the mattress with filler material, a common problem with typical bed in a box foam mattress beds. It’s a terrific alternative to using plastic (many filler layers in the bedding industry are made from plastic pellets and shredded garment fibers).

Manufactured in the USA by Leggett & Platt, the coils come in three gauges and are individually tuned for five ergonomic zones. Together, these zones form a bed that is firmer in some areas (such as the lumbar region) and softer in others (like the shoulders and feet) to provide advanced spinal alignment and support.

I designed many of my own mattresses using the L&P pocketed coil unit that Avocado uses, and customers raved over the supportive yet yielding qualities of the system.

Avocado’s mattresses also feature a reinforced steel perimeter for improved edge support. This allows you to sit at the edge of the mattress without slipping off (a real problem with many foam mattresses) and makes transfer in and out of bed very easy. Th Avocado mattress line is perfect for people with disabilities and for those with transfer issues.

How Tall Are The Mattresses In The Avocado Lineup?

Without the softer and more luxurious pillow-top option, both the Avocado Green and Avocado Vegan mattresses are 11 inches high. The pillow-top adds 2 inches, bringing the total finished height to 13 inches.

How Does Each Model Feel, Firmness And Softness Wise?

Independent testing generally describe both of Avocado’s mattresses as being firm (7 out of 10) without the pillow-top, or medium-firm (6 out of 10) with the pillow-top option. Avocado’s own descriptions, which describe them as “gentle firm” or “luxury plush” depending on whether or not the pillow-top is used, differs slightly, but I think they fall pretty much in the middle.

The Avocado Green pillowtop features organic wool as the filler, and the Avocado Vegan pillow top features an organic cotton fill, and is considered the softer of the two models up top.

Compared to a variety of popular foam bed in a box options on the market, they are slightly firmer, but you don’t have to worry about being trapped inside, having to dig your way out of a hole in your bed.

Remember, Natural Latex is a very resilient substance with a bouncy surface and your body won’t leave an imprint in it, making it drastically different than enveloping materials like memory foam.  It pushed up, countering your body’s natural tendency to sink or immerse in your mattress.

This is due to the material’s high degree of horizontal elasticity: pressure will compress a wider surface, as compared to the defined compression found with memory foam, meaning no pinpoint pressure problems. Latex therefore creates the sensation of floating on the mattress rather than collapsing into it, though pressure mapping of natural latex typically finds few pressure points for stomach and back sleepers. Many people describe the feeling of lying on natural latex as “levitating”.

The independently floating coils in Avocado’s support cores are mapped to five unique ergonomic zones. These zones are firmer or softer to mirror areas of the body with more or less weight, allowing for optimal spinal alignment. This helps to relieve pressure on nerves, opening up spaces between discs in our spine, and promoting increased blood flow through out our body. However, the zones are not significantly different as to be noticeable while sleeping on the mattress.

New: The Avocado 9” Natural Latex Mattress (Nothing But Pure Latex Top To Bottom) Is Making Waves

Float. Don’t sink. This isn’t a memory foam mattress that will swallow you whole. The Avocado 9” Latex Mattress provides gentle, stable, cool, motion-isolating support, but with just a touch of gentle and easy give. It features a whopping 9 inches of natural 100% GOLS organic certified Dunlop latex — sourced from their own farms in India. Unlike their hybrid green and vegan mattresses, there are no springs. Rating 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, this is their firmest mattress, but in an oh-so-good way. It’s ideal for active couples, back or stomach sleepers, and tall/large combination sleepers.

For back pain, chiropractors and sleep doctors have long recommended a natural latex mattress to improve spine health and overall wellness and muscle tone. It’s likely the one mattress that will make you thrive during the day, something most other mattresses don’t bring to the table.

Most all-latex mattresses feel too bouncy. Not the Avocado mattress. They use a  patented, wavy Convoluted Latex which is laser cut and actually dampens the responsive foam layers and reduces motion transfer. So does the 100% GOTS organic certified cotton that we sandwich between each of the latex layers. The result is an all-latex mattress with just the right level or response and bounce, not too jiggly, not too bouncy, for a pure latex mattress.

support so good, IT’S GETTING PATENTED

Avocado’s proprietary convoluted latex reimagines a mattress that is typically made of multiple layers of polyurethane petro-chemically derived foam. Precision lasers are used to surgically incise the top of the foam into concave peaks, along the bottom of the top layer. (They don’t point up, which is the typical configuration used in most foam beds..)

These zig-zagging waves of organic latex inhibit motion transfer and create three targeted zones that contour to your body’s harder bits and natural curves, like hips and shoulders. In the middle, these waves are more compact (1 inch apart), while at the ends, the waves are longer (2 inches apart). This keeps your spine aligned and reduces pressure points in your shoulder and hips. No wonder it is endorsed, after vigorous testing, by the American Chiropractic Association.

like their other models, this top to bottom latex mattress is NEEDLE TUFTED completely BY HAND

Avocado mattresses feature a signature embellishment: distinctive, soft, needle-tufted rosettes made from pure white organic wool. Needle-tufting is a time-honored technique dating back to the 17th century. It’s also highly functional. By pulling ribbons through the full mattress in up to 36 locations, the mattress crafters bind the layers together — without the use of toxic solvent or water-based adhesives. It radically improves durability and stability. And, it’s a hallmark of superb excellence.
