Canada’s Octave Mattress Reviews: 10 Point Objective Testing By Expert Evaluates The Three Model Lineup

The Octave Mattress lineup is a Canadian mattress option that has three models in its program, including the Vista, Mirage, and Horizon models, all made with high performance copper gel memory foam, cooling foams and fabric- to higher industry standards.

For Pressure Relief And Cooling, Copper Infused Memory Foam And A High Tech Fabric Proved Worthy.

I’m Marc Anderson and I designed and manufactured mattresses for 25 years before I began testing and reviewing them.

I put all three Octave Mattress models to the test for comfort, support, cooling, pressure and pain relief, edge support, intimacy, and much more.

For the money, ranging from C$899 in queen size to C$1499, the lineup is kind of like a good, better, best approach with added components and increasing thickness as you move up from The Vista, to The Mirage and ultimately The Horizon model to experience advanced features.

All three models of the Octave mattress lineup include a zippered outer encasement that can be machine washed, a real asset with any mattress.

Using advanced components that are typically found in expensive showroom mattress options costing C$2,000 and up, I felt that the Octave mattresses are affordable, and designed to resolve persistent problems that interfere with sleep and restorative rest, including comfort, proper spine alignment and pain relief, and cooling. The Octave Mattress replaced the Novosbed, a prominent online mattress option in Canada.

There are a lot of consumers who don’t like the idea of using metal springs or coils inside their mattress. People with pain or pressure issues know this, since metal coils are not as effective at pressure relief as memory foam or latex foam, and often provide too much “reverse pressure”. The Octave Mattress models are designed to fill this niche.

Here’s what all three of the Octave Mattress models offers:

  • A cool-to-the-touch CryoFusion™ cooling nano fiber infused outer cover that is machine washable.
  • Pressure relieving and heat vaporizing CopperGel™ memory foam, 2″ thick
  • Motion dampening, pressure relieving Elastex Foam, 2″ thick
  • An 8″ thick motion dampening foam layer with active ventilation channels

If you’ve struggled to find a forever mattress, or at least a mattress that will serve you well for a good 10-15 years, I’d say it’s worth taking a look at the lineup. After testing all three models personally, here are some takeaway bullet points to consider. All three have a few things in common:

  • Target body heat right up top using phase change fabric technology to instantly eliminate hot spots
  • Incorporate pressure relieving copper infused gel/memory foam for effective pressure relief, especially at shoulders and hips. Copper also acts as an insulator and keeps heat from being stored under your body. I get into detail about copper infused foam in the video reviews below.
  • Include a layer of highly responsive latex to add springiness and reduce motion transfer (Mirage and Horizon models, not so much the Vista model which is the basic option)
  • Add sufficient foam layers that balance your body and deliver good “float factor” for weight and support to prevent sinking and depressions, making it easy to turn and to transfer in and out of bed.
  • Provide a zippered and removable outer covering that is stretchy and breathable and machine washable.
  • The company backs each Octave Mattress with a 120 night no questions asked trial period, and a 15 year comprehensive warranty. Each mattress is handcrafted locally in Canada using local craftsmen and women. Mostly, they are made in Ontario.

I Tested And Reviewed All Three Octave Mattress Models: With No Metal Coils, Let’s See How They Performed

All three of the Octave Mattress options, including the Vista 12″ Medium Firm, the Mirage 13″ Medium Firm, and the Horizon 14″ Medium Firm, include at least three basic common features. If you are looking for pressure relief, enhanced cooling, better weight distribution without feeling stuck, and minimal motion transfer, one of these Canadian made mattresses might be a great option.

Each Octave Mattress option contains a unique component called phase change foam, also known as “thermally adaptive foam” or “PCM foam” (Phase Change Material foam) which can quickly absorb heat without using evaporative cooling which requires water. Imagine how ice and water change “phases”, and store hot and cold almost instantly.

Also included in each Octave Mattress option is a layer of copper infused memory foam which also adds a cooling benefit as well as having anti-microbial properties, meaning it can inhibit the growth of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. When copper is infused into the foam of a mattress, it creates an environment that is less hospitable to these microorganisms.

The Mirage and The Horizon also contain latex, which ups the price C$300-600 but if you’ve tried natural latex in previous mattresses, you know it’s worth the upgrade as it adds a wonderful, slightly plusher, spongier and bouncy feel.

Cutaways of all three Octave mattress models prior to testing, for components and craftsmanship evaluation and scoring.

Before testing, I opened up all three models to take a look at the components inside. The first thing I took note of was the level of craftsmanship and the use of higher ILD (density) polyfoam and memory foam (urethane foams). From more basic to the advanced design of the Horizon, the layers vary in thickness to create an 11″, 13″, and 14″ option, each costing a bit more as you advance.

Let’s discuss each option and the benefits you’ll get. One note: We review other mattresses made by the same company who makes The Octave Mattress lineup-GoodMorning.Com, which has about 20 years of design and manufacturing experience and is not a new startup company. I have tested almost all of their products and find them to be highly reliable and customer service to be top drawer.

Phase change fabric, also known as “thermally adaptive fabric” or “PCM foam” (Phase Change Material foam). In the Octave mattress, this material is a unique textile called “Outlast”, which can maintain a microclimate by cycling heat, absorbing it and storing it at a molecular level in the fabric, until the body cools. When the body skin temperature drops, the heat is transferred back to the skin.

Each of the three models also contains an all foam support or base layer that varies from 5-8″ thick, actually about an inch thicker than most all foam brands I’ve tested which usually gives you about 6″.

This makes the Octave lineup beneficially for bigger bodies, couples, or anyone looking for maximum pressure relief especially when sleeping on your side (up to 450 lbs total combined weight).

How All Three Octave Mattress Models Scored In My Comprehensive Reviews

I personally tested, slept on, and reviewed the Vista, Mirage, and Horizon options of The Octave Mattress lineup. Basically each model is a good-better-best type of program, though the more basic model, The Vista, which is the more basic model at C$899 Queen and C$1199 King, is actually a formidable all foam contender that pretty much delivers what you might need to get shoulder pain and hip pain relief. I’d compare it to other brands in that sell for C$400 more. At 12″ thick, it doesn’t feel spongy or too soft- coming in at about 6.5 out of 10, meaning as firm as a traditional innerspring-but without any metal coils at all.

1. Octave “Vista” 12″ Mattress: Features, Benefits, Ratings

The Octave Vista 12″ Mattress contains 3 layers of specialized foam including 2″ of copper gel memory foam for comfort and enhanced cooling, a 2″ layer of polyurethane transitional foam to dampen motion and eliminate pressure, all suspended above an 8″ layer of high density support foam.

I tested the Octave Vista Mattress personally- see what I discovered and how it performed.

I’d describe it as fairly firm, but responsive and yielding enough for back sleepers and some side sleepers.

If you run on the firmer preference side of the fence, it’s a winner- if you like a more plusher, huggable kind of sensation, opt for the Mirage or Horizon, as shown below.

I think it’s an excellent option for back sleepers who struggle with annoying back pain, and as it provides comfortable pressure relief for individuals under 200 lbs. I’m 6’1″ and 195 lbs (88.4 kg) and found it to be a tad firm for my scoliosis and hip pain.

The Octave Vista Mattress isn’t bouncy or springy, and feels more like a traditional memory foam feel-giving, but not highly responsive. For the money, though, it’s easily as good as Nectar, Puffy’s Cloud Mattress (though not as soft) and you’ll save $200-300.

Octave Vista 12″ Performance Rating: 8.6/10 Very Good
Overall Comfort 8 Excellent for side, back
Pressure Relief 8 Very Good, bit better on back than side
Motion Transfer 9 Minor but noticeable
Ease Of Turning 9 Very Good
Edge Support 8 Good
Intimacy 8 Very Good (cuddling +)
Detectable OdorsMinimal Detection after 24 hours
Value vs Cost 10 Excellent: C$899 in Queen, C$1199 in King
Cons/Downside>250 lbs. -might reconsider

2. Octave “Mirage” 13″ Mattress: Features, Benefits, Ratings

The Octave “Mirage” Mattress is the midrange model of the Octave lineup and runs $C1199 in queen and $C1299 in king, making it priced well under many comparable gel/memory foam and latex combination mattresses. It’s the sweet spot model, right in the middle, and I’ve compared it to othr memory foam brands popular in Canada, and it comes in about $100 less expensive for a 13″ option.

I tested the Octave Mirage mattress and I’ll say it hits the sweet spot for a well balanced memory foam mattress with enough bells and whistles- and avoids being overpriced.

Outfitted right up top with PCM (phase change material) that instantly cools and includes 2.5″ of performance copper infused gel/memory foam for optimized pressure reduction.

The Mirage has two additional layer added to its design that include a 1.5″ layer of Talalay latex and a secondary comfort layer of high density foam that is 1.5″ thick. Beneath, you’ll find 2″ of a transitional motion dampening layer, suspended on a 7″ layer of supportive foam.

For couples, or anyone weighing up to 275 lbs. (125kg), you won’t experience sinking, digging your way out of the middle, or have any difficulty changing positions.

For edge support, it’s about the same as The Vista model, but easier to sit to put on a pair of shoes, or to transfer if you have any immobility issues.

It’s notably softer and a bit more plusher, with a bit more immersion and a hugging sensation, than the Vista, and for $300 more, you’ll get a remarkably different mattress, easily comparable to hybrid coil mattresses I’ve reviewed. For a metal coil-free option, I give it high marks for overall comfort, support, and weight distribution, with no hot spot pressure issues. Here’s my scorecard:

Octave Mirage 13″ Performance Rating: 9.4/10 Excellent
Overall Comfort9 Excellent for side, back
Pressure Relief9 Excellent for shoulders and hips
Motion Transfer10 Excellent-none detected
Ease Of Turning9 Very Good
Edge Support9 Very Good
Intimacy10 Excellent- lively, springy
Detectable OdorsMinimal Detection after 24 hours
Value vs Cost10 Excellent: C$1199 in Queen, C$1399 in King
Cons/Downside>275 lbs. -might reconsider

3. Octave “Horizon” 14″ Mattress: Features, Benefits, Ratings

The Octave “Horizon” Mattress is the top tier model of the Octave lineup and runs $C1499 in queen and $C1699 in king, and is made without metal coils. It is 14″ (35.5cm) tall and is medium to medium firm when you are lying on your side or back. I’d say it works well with anyone up to 275lbs (125kg), including couples with bigger bodies. It is made entirely in Canada by local craftspeople.

Detailed review of The Octave Horizon Mattress, made in Canada, the top tier model of the Ocatve lineup.

It features the same cooling stretch knit outer covering that is removable and machine washable, and has a layer of PCM (phase change material) directly underneath outer encasement that instantly cools.

With five specialized foam layers from the top down, the first body contact layer is a 2.5″ of performance copper infused gel/memory foam which immediately provides pressure reduction. Right below, a 1.5″ layer of Talalay latex, supported by 5.5″ of transitional comfort and support foam layers.

For underlying support, a 6″ layer of HD (high density) foam provides lift and support, eliminating sinkage and that trapped sensation found with many all foam or coil options without support.

It’s notably softer and a bit more “plushy” than the Vista, and for $300 more, you’ll get a remarkably different mattress, easily comparable to hybrid coil mattresses I’ve reviewed. For a metal coil-free option, I give it high marks for overall comfort, support, and weight distribution, with no hot spot pressure issues.
